SOAS Concert Series 4th February 2009: Rioplatenses/Duo Tanzango

With a fresh look and a twinkly eye Duo Tanzango create light-hearted transformations of some of Astor Piazzolla's sophisticated and intensely expressive compositions, as well as some rootsy milongoas.

While everybody's heard of tango, very little is known about Argentina's 'other music'. Led by Buenos-Aires born vocalist Guillermo, Rioplatenses invite us to discover foot-tapping chacareras and candombes, evocative zambas and chamames, and, of course, their unique take on traditional tango too.

SOAS Concert Series 27th January 2009: Matthaios Tsahouridis

Matthaios Tsahouridis was born in Northern Greece, growing up in a fertile musical environment that inspired him from a very young age. He plays a whole range of traditional string instruments with virtuosity, but he is most devoted to the Pontic lyra. He has been performing with his brother Kostas, a singer, ever since he can remember, and together they presented a repertoire of Greek Pontic music from the Black Sea region at the Brunei Gallery at SOAS in January 2009.
